Firstly we will start off with the two methods when you are sitting - casual and classic. With the casual position, sit on the edge of your seat resting your guitar on your right leg (if you are right handed) and hold the neck of the guitar with your left hand. The guitar will be more or less in a horizontal plane. With the classical seated position the guitar body is resting in between the legs and the neck raised higher in the left hand - around 40 degrees to the horizontal.

For the standing position, put the strap over your shoulder and adjust it for a comfortable position mid body. Hold the neck of your guitar with your left hand again in a normal position of about 30-40 degrees to the horizontal. When you place your hand on the neck of the guitar make sure your wrists and hands are relaxed. If your hand feels awkward you are probably in danger of a strain or injury.

When you are playing the guitar you press your fingers of your left hand onto the strings just behind the frets.This is called fretting. You use your right hand to strum the guitar near the bridge. Being a beginner your fingers will hurt at first by pressing them on the frets but after a week or two you will get guitar fingers and not notice. Make sure your fingernails are kept short, this will make it easier to play, use only the tips of your fingers and as I said before when you are playing make sure you are pressing just behind each fret.
